Anatase

TiO2

Anatase is one of three of the more commonly occurring titanium dioxide minerals found in nature, the others being brookite and rutile. It generally occurs as bipyramidal or tabular crystals and can be a variety of colours.

Selected Australian Occurrences:

  • At Kingsgate and Wallangra, New South Wales.
  • As lustrous sharp crystals on quartz from the Queensland Tablelands region.
  • As sharp distinct crystals on or in quartz at Bundaleer, South Australia.
  • As silvery blue-black steep pyramidal crystals on and in quartz at Philosopher’s Ridge, Mount Lyell, Tasmania.
  • In a range of colours in heavy mineral sands at Carapooee, Victoria.
  • As silvery black tabular and truncated pyramidal crystals in miarolitic cavities at Lake Boga, Victoria.
  • Widespread in granites and in alluvial deposits in various localities.
