Bismuthinite commonly occurs with native bismuth and can form as silver-grey curved wires, or prismatic crystals often as parallel aggregates of columnar crystals. It can also be massive with vertical striations. Bismuthinite can be difficult to distinguish visually from stibnite or sulphosalts like boulangerite.

- Widespread in tin-tungsten deposits in New South Wales, but particularly at Kingsgate.
- At the Biggenden Mine, Queensland.
- At the Princess Mine and the Stormont Mine, Moina, Tasmania.
- Pittong, Victoria.
- Womobi Mine, Thologolong, Victoria.
